Reliance Spectrum Quiz – Learning Through Competition at Scale

The Reliance Spectrum Quiz stands as a defining example of how quizzes can be used as a powerful Learning & Development (L&D) tool within large organisations.

Organised by Reliance Industries Limited, the quiz was part of Spectrum, the company’s flagship Learning & Development festival for employees across locations.

The mandate was clear - to design a quiz that educated employees on energy, sustainability, and business without making it feel like an exam.

The Objective: Learning Without the Classroom Experience

Reliance Industries is one of India’s largest energy companies and is making significant investments in clean technology and the future of energy.

The quiz was designed to:

  • Build awareness of global sustainability practices

  • Encourage understanding of oil & gas, resources, and energy transition

  • Expose employees to how companies and countries are planning for future growth

The Quiz Architecture: Four Phases, One Learning Journey

Phase 1: Online Preliminary Round

The quiz began with an online preliminary round conducted over the course of a week.

To ensure fairness and scale:

  • A 500-question bank was created

  • Participants received varied question sets

  • Topics spanned oil & gas, sustainability, global business, and energy economics

A key design choice was the inclusion of clues within questions, enabling participants to logically work toward answers instead of relying purely on factual recall.

The emphasis was on thinking, not memorisation.

Phase 2: Site-Level Quarterfinals

Based on performance in the preliminaries, participants qualified for site-level quarterfinals conducted at:

  • Dahej

  • Vadodara

  • Jamnagar

  • Reliance Corporate Park, Navi Mumbai
     

An important organisational objective was fulfilled here: the quarterfinals were conducted by Reliance employees themselves.

 

This helped:

  • Develop internal quizmasters

  • Encourage peer-led learning

  • Strengthen ownership of the learning experience
     

From each location, four teams advanced to the national final.

Phase 3: Team Formation & Cross-Functional Collaboration

One of the most impactful outcomes of the quiz was how teams were formed.

  • Employees participated individually in the online round

  • Teams were created based on scores

  • Many participants collaborated with colleagues they had never worked with before
     

This transformed the quiz into a collaborative exercise, fostering interaction across functions and locations.

Phase 4: National Final at Navi Mumbai

The national final was hosted at Reliance Corporate Park, Navi Mumbai.

The final featured:

  • Questions on Reliance’s history and evolution

  • Insights drawn from public sources and annual reports

  • Global news & case studies on sustainability and energy innovation
     

Questions went beyond surface knowledge.
For example, one of the questions explored how Sweden uses wooden windmills to reduce environmental impact by avoiding furnaces—an idea that sparked discussion and reflection among participants.

Design Choices That Defined the Experience

Several elements ensured the quiz remained engaging rather than intimidating:

  • Clue-driven question framing

  • Animated and visually rich rounds

  • Progressive difficulty levels

  • Strong alignment with real-world business contexts
     

Each round rewarded reasoning and perspective, not speed alone.

Participant Feedback & Impact

Feedback from participants and organisers consistently highlighted that:

  • The quiz did not feel like a traditional test

  • The clues made complex topics approachable

  • The experience was challenging yet enjoyable

  • For a corporate L&D initiative, this balance was critical.
     

The quiz succeeded in creating a learning environment where employees were motivated to think, discuss, and explore ideas.

The Reliance Spectrum Quiz was more than a competition. It:

  • Reinforced Reliance’s vision for sustainable growth
